Why local matters

One person, covering the whole of North Somerset.

No call centre, no national rota sending whoever's nearest. You deal with me from the first message to the final test — based in Clevedon, out to your door wherever you are in the area, with no travel surcharge.

What you actually get

Done well, and easy to live with

A charger is only as good as the install behind it. Here's what's fitted as standard on every North Somerset job, in plain English — no jargon.

Surge & trip protection, fitted as standard
Two safety devices come as standard on every job. An SPD shields your charger and home electronics from power surges (think lightning or grid spikes). An RCBO gives the charger its own safety switch — if anything ever goes wrong, only the charger trips, not your whole house. Other installers charge extra for these. We don't.
Works with cheap-rate smart tariffs
Every charger we fit works with smart tariffs like Octopus Intelligent Go. It charges your car automatically overnight when electricity is cheapest — as little as 7.5p a unit instead of 28p+. You wake up to a full battery, and your bill is a fraction of public charging.
Simple to use, with a proper walkthrough
Charging is as easy as plugging in — the app does the rest. Before I leave, I'll set the app up on your phone, connect the smart tariff, and show you exactly how it works: how to charge, how to check usage, how to top up in a hurry. No manual to puzzle over.
All paperwork & warranties handled
The required notification to the energy network (DNO) and your electrical safety certificate are both sorted for you — nothing to file. You also get a 3 to 7-year manufacturer warranty on the charger and 12 months on the workmanship.

EV Charger Questions

Anything not answered here — get in touch. A straight answer, usually the same day.

How much does EV charger installation cost in North Somerset?+
Installation starts from £925 fully fitted including VAT. The Sync Energy Tethered is £925, the Zappi GLO is £1,035, and the Andersen A3 starts from £1,481. Every package includes the charger, cable run, surge protection (SPD), a dedicated RCBO, the DNO G98 notification, electrical certificate, and app setup. No travel surcharge is applied anywhere across North Somerset — the price is the same whether you're in Clevedon, Weston-super-Mare or a rural village.
Which areas of North Somerset do you cover?+
We cover the whole of North Somerset from our base in Clevedon, including Nailsea, Portishead, Weston-super-Mare, Yatton, Congresbury, Backwell, Long Ashton, Failand, Wraxall, Tickenham, Walton-in-Gordano, Kenn, Kingston Seymour, Claverham, Cleeve, Portbury and Pill. There is no travel surcharge to any of these locations. If your village isn't listed, get in touch anyway — if we can reach you, we'll help.
Which EV charger do you recommend?+
For most North Somerset homes the Zappi GLO is the best all-round choice, particularly for properties with solar panels or plans to add them. It monitors your solar output and sends surplus generation into your car automatically, and is solar-ready from day one. The Sync Energy Tethered is the best value option with a fixed 7.5m cable. The Andersen A3 is the right choice where design matters, with over 100 colour options and a 7-year warranty.
Do I need a new fuse board before getting an EV charger?+
Not always. The board needs a metal casing, a spare way, the ability to accept a Type A RCBO, and surge protection fitted. Many older North Somerset properties — particularly Victorian and Edwardian housing in Clevedon and Portishead — have plastic-cased consumer units or boards without spare capacity, in which case a consumer unit upgrade is the right starting point. Most homes from the 1980s onwards do not need this. It's all confirmed at the survey stage before any price is agreed.
Is planning permission needed for a home EV charger?+
No. A domestic EV charger is classed as permitted development in England. No application to North Somerset Council is required. The only paperwork is the DNO G98 notification to Western Power Distribution, which is submitted on your behalf on installation day at no extra charge.
Can I charge my car from solar panels?+
Yes — the Zappi GLO was built for exactly this. It monitors your solar output in real time and automatically routes surplus generation into your car rather than exporting it to the grid. Energy that would otherwise earn a few pence at the export rate instead adds range for free. Solar ownership is high across North Somerset, especially in the rural villages, so this is a popular choice. The Andersen A3 also supports solar integration.
Am I eligible for the OZEV grant?+
The OZEV Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme grant of up to £350 is available to flat owners with dedicated off-street parking, private renters with dedicated off-street parking, and landlords. Homeowners in a single-unit house are no longer eligible, as that element closed in 2023. Where you qualify, the application is submitted on your behalf as part of the installation at no extra cost.
How quickly can you install?+
Most North Somerset installations can be booked within one to two weeks of a quote being agreed. Being based centrally in Clevedon means scheduling is flexible across the whole area. If you have a specific date in mind such as a new car arriving, get in touch as early as possible and the installation will be scheduled around it where possible.

Local expertise

EV Charger Installation Across North Somerset

Clevedon Electric is a North Somerset-based electrical contractor specialising in home EV charger installation. We work exclusively in the area we know best — from the coastal towns of Clevedon and Portishead to the market towns of Nailsea and Weston-super-Mare, and out to the rural villages around Congresbury, Yatton and Kenn. Because we're local, we offer same-week availability and never charge travel fees across our service area.

As more North Somerset households switch to electric vehicles, the demand for reliable home charging has grown sharply. Public charge points across the area remain limited and expensive — often 75p to 85p per kWh at rapid chargers, compared to as little as 7.5p per kWh on an intelligent home tariff like Octopus Intelligent Go. A properly installed home charger pays for itself within two to three years for a typical driver covering around 800 miles a month.

We install only smart, OZEV-approved chargers — the Sync Energy Tethered, Zappi GLO and Andersen A3 — all compatible with standard UK Type 2 electric vehicles and all able to schedule charging automatically around the cheapest off-peak rates. Every installation is carried out by a Part P registered electrician and comes with a full electrical certificate, DNO G98 notification, and manufacturer warranty.

Coastal towns
Clevedon & Portishead
Older Victorian and Edwardian housing often needs a fuse board review first. Coastal weatherproofing specified as standard for outdoor cable runs near the seafront.
Market towns
Nailsea, Yatton & Weston
Largely 1970s–80s and newer housing with modern boards. Most installs are straightforward and completed in a single visit.
Rural villages
Congresbury, Kenn & Wraxall
Larger properties, often with solar panels — the Zappi GLO's solar integration makes near-free summer charging genuinely achievable here.
Why charge at home

What Home Charging Saves a North Somerset Driver

Public rapid chargers across North Somerset cost up to 85p per kWh. A smart home charger on Octopus Intelligent Go costs as little as 7.5p overnight. For an average driver covering 800 miles a month, that's a saving of over £500 a year — meaning a home charger pays for itself in under two years for most drivers.

For North Somerset homeowners with solar panels — and solar ownership is high across the area's rural villages and newer estates — the Zappi GLO goes further still. It monitors your solar output and routes surplus generation into your car before it reaches the export meter. On a good summer day, many owners charge for essentially nothing.
